Acoustic Body and the Perspective of Acoustic Anthropology
The experience of expressing and listening to sound is precisely a bodily
experience. The body links various senses, and the senses cooperate to
search for a sound world, which is felt on the horizon of our whole body.
With regard to this bodily experience, I will propose a notion, "acoustic
body," to explore an ontological, an epistemological, a sensory, and
a phenomenological relationship between sound and body. The acoustic body
is the one which is with the sensation evoked by sound, the one which is
shaken by sound while reverberating with it, and the one which co-vibrates
through sound. The exploration of acoustic body will be further developed
into an "acoustic anthropology". The main theme of this new domain
of anthropology is to investigate how meaningful the acoustic experiences
are to human beings. It consists of four realms, namely, the study of "acoustic
ecology", "acoustemology", "acoustic senses",
and "acoustic body". Acoustic anthropology emphasizes the echoing
of sound rather than sound itself. Echo is an intense reality of sound,
which resounds with environments, gives us knowledge of the world, penetrates
our senses, and thrusts up our body. By accentuating echoing as well as
co-vibration, flow, sway, and groove which sound brings about, sound will
gain a new dimension through which it vividly resonates.
