The Musicological Society of Japan (MSJ) was founded in 1952 by pioneering music scholars in Japan. Since then, the MSJ has contributed to the development of music studies in Japan for more than 50 years. In the course of its activity, however, the need to make more contacts with international society has been recognized to promote its activity from a personal level to an institutional level. With this recognition, the MSJ hosted SIMS 1990 OSAKA with the IMS, and IMJ 2002 in Shizuoka to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Building on this past success, the MSJ has supported a plan to organize an International Forum in Yokohama this year. It is my great pleasure and honor to have this occasion to announce its realization and to express my deep gratitude to those who have been engaged in its organization.

This International Forum has a special feature that musicologists of the younger generation are given chance to be invited. Its Prospectus, gBeyond Boundaries: A Perspective for the Future of Musicology,h is a theme that can be discussed no more enthusiastically than by young scholars of today. A scene of active discussion for three days by young musicologists from Asia, Europe and America will surely be a thrilling experience for me. I expect the outcome of the Forum will become an important cornerstone to set a new paradigm for the studies of music in a global level. It is my hope that all participants of the Forum will enjoy the three days of discussion and their mutual encounters as well.
